What’cha Playin’? 12/23/16

If you’re keeping up with my streaming, you’d know!

Just kidding (sorta). I tried out Oni, the PS2 Ghost in the Shell knock-off by Bungie and… Man is it BAD. Well, maybe not bad, but certainly not good. From the 4-ish hours I spent with it last night… The controls are wonky, some parts are overwhelmingly annoying and unfair (one hit kills, what?), the gameplay is pretty much just mashing the same controls over and over again in the hopes that it works, the levels are ugly and boring, the story is bland… All in all it’s a pretty underwhelming package. I’ve only completed 5 of the 13 or so missions in the game, but it’s getting hard to continue, not only in difficulty, but mentally. There’s nothing to keep me going.

The only redeeming qualities are the neat attacks and throws, but once you learn that they’re all pretty much the same and only look different… Well… Yeah…

Have you checked out the other Cyberphile links from the About page? You should! I get my microphone back soon and with it I’ll be able to perform higher quality streams and video content. Stay tuned!

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – PS2 Review — December 21, 2016

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – PS2 Review

My Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex review is now live! You can read the full review from the Review page, or by clicking here.

Check the About page for links to Cyberphile accounts on Twitch, Facebook, and YouTube!

Here’s the bottom line if you don’t have time to read the full review:

Pros

  • Fun 3PS gameplay with a few twists to keep it fresh.
  • Varied, fun levels that never get stale.
  • Well written story that seamlessly ties into the anime.
  • Great voice acting by all the characters you’d hope were there.

Cons

  • Pretty short.
  • Sometimes unbalanced baddies.
  • Batou levels just aren’t as fun as Motoko levels.

Final Score: 9.5/10

If you’re a fan of Ghost in the Shell in any way, you need to play this game. It’s a great supplement to the anime. If you just want to play a fun, futuristic, fresh 3PS, you’re in good hands with this one. I highly recommend it.

System Shock 2 – PC Review — December 20, 2016

System Shock 2 – PC Review

My System Shock 2 review is now live! You can read the full review from the Review page, or by clicking here.

Check the About page for links to Cyberphile accounts on Twitch, Facebook, and YouTube!

Here’s the bottom line if you don’t have time to read the full review:

Pros

  • Great atmosphere, story, and sound design.
  • The variety of things you can do, like hacking, research, and modifying your weaponry.
  • Gun play and gameplay in general is satisfying.

Cons

  • Frustrating difficulty.
  • A somewhat convoluted HUD.
  • First time players are pretty much lost with stat building, and trying to build a balanced character (as opposed to a specialized character) will only lead to failure.

Final Score: 7/10

All that said, System Shock 2 is great at pulling you in with its interesting story and incredibly immersive atmosphere. The game is great too, but there are just so many problems and challenges that a first time player must face when giving it a go.

The Bottom Line

Pros

  • Fantastic, tense, and terrifying atmosphere.
  • Great and believable characters.
  • Wonderfully told story.
  • Great puzzles.
  • Unlockable costumes.

Cons

  • A sometimes unfair and frustrating challenge.
  • The removal of a robust ending system.
  • Trains.

Final Score: 9.5/10

It really is so close to being a best game ever. If it weren’t for those minor frustrations, I really think it would be on that list. And for the record, the List is fluid. Maybe in a future playthrough, SH3 will land on that list.

What’cha Playin’? 9/9/16 – Silent Hill 3 — September 9, 2016

What’cha Playin’? 9/9/16 – Silent Hill 3

My second playthrough through the Silent Hill series is going swimmingly, so far. In Silent Hill, I got the Good+ ending this time, as opposed to the Bad ending on my first playthrough. In Silent Hill 2, I was aiming for a different ending, as on my first playthrough I got the In Water ending, which is a beautifully depressing ending to a beautifully depressing game, it’s my favorite ending thus far. At any rate, I got the Leave ending this time. Silent Hill 3 reworked its ending system, so I already know the ending I’ll be getting.

But man, Silent Hill 3 is probably the creepiest, tense, and most difficult title thus far. Enemies are pretty quick and powerful, and take quite a bit to kill, meaning that running past them is often your best bet, if you can. Not only that, but the enemies are far more numerous as well. Speaking of enemies, they have the strangest designs in the series. Those really big guys with the twitchy faces are terrifying. At any rate, I’m hoping to beat 3 this weekend and possibly move on to the Room, another pretty unsettling title in the series.

Here’s a preview of my review for Silent Hill 2:

If Silent Hill was a home-run, Silent Hill 2 is a grand slam. Silent Hill 2 had big shoes to fill after the work of art the first Silent Hill was, and oh man, did it ever fit the bill. Silent Hill 2  is widely regarded as one of if not the best survival horror game, let alone one of the best games of all time.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (BGE) — February 10, 2016

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (BGE)

Here’s a preview:

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is a game that just happened to strike the right chords with me. It’s got catchy, memorable soundtrack, wonderfully fleshed out characters and a great story line, and plays half like a turn based RPG, and half like a Japanese visual novel or dating simulator. Not only that, but its background is very heavy into tarot and various mythology, both topics that I have a deep interest in. In a way, this is one of my perfect games. Normally, I talk about the gameplay before the story, but today, we’re gonna switch it up.
