What’cha Playin’? – 8/26/16

I’ve been playing a little bit of everything, honestly. I jumped a star system or two in No Man’s Sky. I’ve been playing a bit of hard mode Downwell. I’ve also been working through story mode in the King of Fighters XIV with each pre-set team.

Also on Tuesday, Worms W.M.D. released, and I’m interested in picking it up, but I personally feel as though $30 is pretty steep for a Worms game. If anyone has any insight into that, I’d love to hear it.

The King Of Fighters XIV Releases Today — August 23, 2016

The King Of Fighters XIV Releases Today

I’m a pretty big King of Fighters fan, and while I wasn’t impressed with the demo, I’m hoping that having the full roster of characters available will help.

I’m still searching for that perfect ship in No Man’s Sky, so no real progress has been made there.

In Downwell, I was able to make it to the third area on Hard mode, so progress is coming, bit by bit.

What’cha Playin’? No Man’s Sky and Downwell — August 22, 2016

What’cha Playin’? No Man’s Sky and Downwell

Soon, I’m thinking I’ll be able to actually review No Man’s Sky. I’ve made some serious progress, and have advanced to maximum efficiency for my exosuit, multi-tool, and starship. Soon, I’ll be heading for the center of the galaxy; I just want to see if I can find a ship that I prefer the model of. I had some really cool adventures in No Man’s Sky the last two days, between strange, flying space worms and some nifty ships.

I’ve also been playing a bit of Downwell here and there. I have everything done except the palette unlocks that merely come with time, and to complete Hard Mode. I managed to make it to the third world on hard mode, but it’s well… Hard. I do think it’s a good challenge though; it definitely doesn’t feel like there’s no way to do it.

Heads Up – The Next Two Weeks May Be Slow Here — August 16, 2016

Heads Up – The Next Two Weeks May Be Slow Here

I have moved back up to school, and the training weeks for my job began yesterday. As a result, there may not be much to say for the next two weeks, as I’ll actually have little free time to myself. I’ll still try to squeeze a post in daily, but for example, I was only able to play two rounds of Downwell yesterday; that’s all I had time for between training and moving in to this apartment.

Here’s the bottom line if you don’t have time to read the full review:

The Bottom Line

Pros:

  • Fun, fast-paced, arcade style action.
  • Unique levels and mechanics, keeping the game very fresh.
  • Plenty of powerups to tailor to your playstyle and keep things fresh.
  • Easy to pick up, play, and enjoy, tough to master, but you’ll love every moment.
  • Plenty of colors and other things to unlock.
  • 5$ price tag.

Cons:

  • Not everyone will appreciate the simplistic art style.
  • Ultimately, the game is pretty short once you get rather good at it.

Final Score: 9.5/10

If you’re looking for something to give you some fast fun for cheap, consider Downwell. You’ll find no better arcade style game quite like it.

What’cha Playin’? 8/12/16 — August 12, 2016

What’cha Playin’? 8/12/16

I’m kind of sad that people are upset with No Man’s Sky. I personally love the game, and really, just give it a try on your own. This game is like little kid me’s dream come true. That aside, I also downloaded Downwell after finally trying it, since my friend plays it all the time.

Downwell is a pixelated randomly generated shmup, but in reverse. You fall down a well with rocket boots that shoot downwards at things rising up from the bottom. There is platforming as well, and each level has an end. As you progress, things get harder, but it’s easy to pick up and play. You can get different shots for your boots like laser and a triple spread shot, as well as a power-up at the end of each level, enabling you get a bit of an edge on the increasingly difficult enemies. There are shops to heal your character or give you extra shots on your boots before reloading, which happens automatically whenever you touch the ground. Each time you die, it’s back to the start with none of your powerups. As you progress, you’ll unlock “styles” for additional challenge, and palettes to change the colors and feel of the game. It’s one of those easy-to-pickup, hard-to-master style arcade games and it’s a ton of fun. For only 5$ on PS4 or Steam, I highly recommend it.
