What’cha Playin’? 1/3/17

Well, I’ve been playing some Garou: Mark of Wolves on Twitch, and last night I tried my hand at the original Sonic the Hedgehog, to no avail. I made it to Labyrinth Zone’s boss, but just couldn’t make it. It gets pretty tough!

Additionally, I’ve been playing The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D along side my friend playing the original to spot the differences and so I can eventually do a full review on my favorite Zelda game.

Lastly, I’ve been throwing around some idea for my next video on YouTube… We’ll see where that train of thoughts leads me.

New Video on YouTube! — January 2, 2017

New Video on YouTube!

All week I’ve been working (at my job) and when I haven’t been doing that, I’ve been working on editing my new video on Cyberphile’s channel on YouTube: You Should be Playing: Garou: Mark of the Wolves. I’m actually pretty happy with how it turned out, but I’d like to hear your feedback. I’m working on improving, and I’ll need to start recording for another video soon.

Additionally, if you’re a Twitter person, Cyberphile now has a Twitter that should get updated whenever we go live on Twitch or upload a new video on YouTube.

And speaking of Twitch, we’ve been playing Garou: Mark of the Wolves and the Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask on stream. Plus clips for my next video will be streamed there too, most likely.

What’cha Playin’? 12/27/16

I’m very nearly done with the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I’m in Ganon’s Tower now, but the difficulty has ramped up pretty significantly in the last few dungeons. I died while in the tower, but I’m equipped with 4 blue potions, so I’m ready this time! Other than that, we’ve been streaming, as you can see from twitch.tv/cyberphileTV Garou: Mark of the Wolves, just because it’s so fun and quick to pick up and play, despite the fact that we end up playing it for hours. We’re working on fixing minor audio settings with streaming, but we’re getting it. Today may be the start of me working on next week’s video and hopefully finishing a Link to the Past. Then it’s back to work tomorrow.

Don’t forget to check the About page for links to all of Cyberphile’s content, and feel free to comment about anything you’ve been playing. Discussion is welcome!

What’cha Playin’? 12/22/16

A lot of stuff, actually. If you’re not following Cyberphile on Twitch, you’re missing out on streams of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and Deus Ex. There’s more to come too! If you’re following on Facebook, I always post when I’m streaming, or when I plan to. You can probably expect more streaming tonight. I haven’t been recording microphone audio, but I will be soon.

I’m actually guiding my friend through his first playthrough of Majora, and Garou is just a ton of fun with us beating up on each other. I did start Deus Ex, and there are a lot of really neat ideas in it.

From what I understand, Deus Ex is kind of like cybernetic James Bond. You’re an anti-terrorist agent with a neuro-interface fighting terrorists and using different weapons, tools (like lockpicks and hacking tools) and your wits to deal with threats. You’re actually pretty squishy, so there is an emphasis on sneaking instead of dealing with a threat head on. Luckily, objectives often have multiple ways to tackle them. You can always just take the front door, guns-a-blazing, or multiple other options, like entering a nearby building first, taking a sewer or ventilation shaft, and so on. There are also some RPG elements that work really nicely. As you complete objectives or explore hidden areas, you’ll be given skill points to spend on various things like your skill with various weaponry, the effectiveness of medikits, how good you are at lockpicking or hacking, and much more. I’ve only completed the first two main missions in the game, so I’m still getting my feet wet, but it seems pretty cool.

What’cha Playin’? 12/12/16

Over the weekend I was able to play a bit of Final Fantasy XV, though I didn’t make any story progress. Like usual, I pretty much just did side quests before getting frustrated at a specific fishing quest.

I played a ton of Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and got all of the trophies in it, though I’m still missing a few gallery items somehow. I’m not sure how to unlock them all, but I definitely want to. I’m hoping they’re just unlockable through normal play and that I’ll get them all with time.

Lastly, I started System Shock: Enhanced Edition, which is the first game in the series with enhanced controls and graphics. I’m actually really liking it thus far, I’ve made it through the entire first area, which is pretty huge, actually. In the year 2072, you play as a skilled hacker who hacks into a space station owned by the Trioptimum Corporation who makes high tech interfaces for human use, among other things. Instead of being punished for his crimes, a man states he can clear the hacker’s name, if he agrees to hack into SHODAN, the space station’s AI, and that the hacker will also be awarded with a military-grade interface. The hacker agrees, does his job, and then gets the interface surgically installed, which requires a 6 month recovery coma. After 6 months, the hacker wakes up to find everyone gone, the place overrun with cyborgs and mutants, with SHODAN having plans on wiping out the Earth. It’s up to the hacker to figure out how to stop SHODAN. It feels very BioShock-esque, which makes sense, seeing as Looking Glass Studios worked with Irrational (of BioShock fame) to release System Shock 2. Seems to me that Irrational picked up some tricks from their time with Looking Glass.

At any rate, it’s a good thing, because I feel the game has aged pretty well, aside from the crazy menu navigation. The story bits are told through audio logs you can find scattered around the ship, and messages from characters such as SHODAN. The game plays kind of like an exploration-shooter, almost like DOOM but with an inventory system and more complex puzzles, like hacking and the weird, Rez-style cyberspace you have to mess around in to unlock doors and things. It’s a really unique amalgamation of gameplay, but it works really well and is pretty fun once you get the hang of it. Enemies can be kind of tough, but you can find plenty of healing items if you scour every nook and cranny and play cautiously.

The atmosphere is fantastic. SHODAN is a fantastic villian thus far, whenever her creepy cybernetic face pops up saying things like “Go any farther and I will kill you”, it sends shivers down my spine. I’m really digging the cyberpunk setting, and I think I feel a new genre of games I want to play…

What’cha Playin’? 12/8/16

Didn’t have too much time for games yesterday, was pretty busy with work and school, and am currently running on 4-5 hours of sleep, but I had a good streak of matches in Garou: Mark of the Wolves with some guy. I won some, he won some; I genuinely had a good time. Ggs, friend.

I’ve also been slowly rewatching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and I’m on the last 4 episodes now. Really solid series with great characters. More on that once I finish it.

Though I didn’t get a chance to try it out, Rocket League got an update with new arena/s, so check that out if it interests you.

What’cha Playin’? 12/7/16

No actual news today, just working on FFXV, and when I’m not, I’m playing a bit of Garou, Rocket League, and Gauntlet. I made some decent story progress in FFXV, as I’ve knocked out a good deal of the side quests.

I do, however, have some big news on the horizon, hopefully, as long as everything works itself out. Stay tuned for that.

What’cha Playin? 12/6/16 — December 6, 2016

What’cha Playin? 12/6/16

As you may have noticed, I beat Amnesia: The Dark Descent over the weekend, so I was able to write up a review for it, something I’ve been waiting to do since I created the Best Games Ever List, since Amnesia begins with A, and as such, is the first title on the list. Great game.

Also, another one of my favorite games ever (and yes, is on the list) got rereleased with netplay on the PS4: Garou: Mark of the Wolves. This is my favorite fighting game of all time, so I highly recommend it, and you can always read up on my review more details. I did do some slight editing to that page as well.

And of course, I’ve been chugging away at Final Fantasy XV. I’m on Chapter 6, and my characters are levels 48-46. I’ve been doing pretty much ALL of the optional stuff, and my current play time is around 40 hours. I’m still liking it a lot. During the long car rides in game, I’ve also been playing a bit of the original Final Fantasy as well, which works well since it’s a total grind-fest.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves/Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves (BGE) — February 11, 2016

Garou: Mark of the Wolves/Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves (BGE)

My Garou: Mark of the Wolves/Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves review for the Best Games Ever list is now live. You can read it from the Best Games Ever list, or by clicking here.

Also, did you know that Cyberphile has a Facebook page? Feel free to swing by and get our new posts in your newsfeed.

Here’s a preview:

“Certainly, they existed. Those blinded by ambition. Those consumed with vengeance. But here, they do not exist. Only winners and losers here. For here, the mighty rule!” Garou: Mark of the Wolves is my friend’s and mine main go-to fighter, right next to Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike: Fight for the Future. The reason? It’s simple, balanced, fun, and has plenty of cool characters. Also, I own a stand up Neo Geo MVS cabinet, so there is no better way to play a fighter than shoulder to shoulder, in my opinion.
