What’cha Playin’? 6/20/16 — June 20, 2016

What’cha Playin’? 6/20/16

This weekend I played a lot of Guilty Gear: Xrd – Revelator. I watched the entirety of the story (yes watched, not played), completed over 400 combos and 70 missions. Soon (probably today) I start working on this version’s M.O.M. Mode, then at some point I’ll play a bit online as well. I’ll be able to write up a review for it soon.

If you’re not familiar with Revelator, check out my review on Guilty Gear: Xrd – SIGN, as pretty much everything I wrote there holds true for Revelator, with some changes. The graphics are just a teensy bit more polished, (though you’ll need a sharp eye as SIGN looks gorgeous to begin with) there are new menus and HUD, your character will glow blue when a BURST is ready, there’s a new lobby with a customizable avatar for online mode, a fishing mode for collectibles and character colors, a new story, 5 new characters (Jam, Johnny, Raven, Haehyun, and Jack ‘O), a change to the tutorial and mission modes, and a ton of things that I’m probably missing, forgetting, or haven’t tried yet, like M.O.M. mode. If you’re a Guilty Gear or fighting game fan in general, you really should get Revelator, especially if you liked SIGN.

In anime-related news, Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto was as good as it always is (the arm sax) and Kiznaiver, well… It seems like there’s a LOT going on to be wrapped up in a single episode… I guess we’ll see what happens on Saturday.

What’cha Playin’? 6/17/16 – Guilty Gear: Xrd – Revelator — June 17, 2016

What’cha Playin’? 6/17/16 – Guilty Gear: Xrd – Revelator

I’ve finally got around to playing Guilty Gear: Xrd – Revelator. I almost forgot how much I loved SIGN! Anyway, I’ve just been tackling the Episode mode so far (that’s like your basic arcade mode) as the stories in Episode mode take place just a few days before the main story. I only need to beat Episode mode with May and Zato and then I can get started on the actual story mode, which I’m looking forward to. I liked the story in SIGN, so I’m sure Revelator won’t disappoint.

Also this weekend we get another episode of Kiznaiver and Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto, so I’m looking forward to that too. See everyone on Monday!

What’cha Doin’? 6/16/16 — June 16, 2016

What’cha Doin’? 6/16/16

Well, I’ve actually been watching and playing a lot of new things lately. Over the weekend I finally started watching an anime on my backlist, Kill la Kill. It’s fun, crazy, and over the top and I love it for that. I’m a little over halfway through the series now. I also watched a couple of Toshiaki Toyoda’s films, 9 Souls and Blue Spring (Aoi Haru). 9 Souls tells the story of 9 escaped convicts, mostly murderers, who are on a search for a large number of counterfeit bills that a 10th, non-escaping convict told them he hid. It’s a great film, part drama, part comedy, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who doesn’t mind reading subtitles. Blue Spring is a delinquent coming of age film, based on the manga of the same name, and personally, I didn’t care for it that much. The cinematography, setting, and acting was great, but the plot seemed kind of empty and really didn’t make me care much for the characters. I understand that the manga is told in a vignette style, so maybe not enough detail was given to each character the way it was in the manga, as things must surely be cut out.

In the realm of games, I finished my Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst review, and probably won’t go back to it for a while. I started Guilty Gear: Xrd – Revelator, and I’m loving it just as much as I loved SIGN. I won’t be able to do a review or anything with it for a while though, as I have a lot of game left to play.

What’cha Playin’? – 5/5/16 — May 5, 2016

What’cha Playin’? – 5/5/16

Happy Cinco de Mayo for those who it applies to.

I’ve just been plugging away at the usual suspects. Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign, Rocket League, Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars, and Zombi.

I also tried one of May’s PlayStation Plus titles, Table Top Racing: World Tour. It’s pretty neat, and when I need a Mario Kart style game, It can scratch that itch. While it doesn’t have the kind of personality Mario Kart has, it does have power ups that you can use to cruise your way to victory. I’ve only just begun, but it looks like there are weapons you can attach to your wheels too, that you can operate based on a cooldown. It’s a fun, combat racing game on a table top, and you can run into various obstacles, sending them all over the race track, such as oil bottles, bread rolls, and sushi. There are various challenges, such as time trial, and fastest lap challenges, but again, I’ve only scratched the surface. We’ll see how it hold up once I give it more of a chance. I just wish there was local multiplayer.

Starting today and going to the 9th is Overwatch’s open Beta on PS4. I’m looking forward to trying it out! I’ll get back to you about it tomorrow!

What’cha Playin’? 5/4/16 — May 4, 2016

What’cha Playin’? 5/4/16

May the Fourth Be With You.

With the school semester winding down, I’ve had more time to put into games recently. Over the weekend, my friend and I played through Jet Grind Radio for Game Boy Advance on the principal of being huge JSR fans. I wasn’t a big fan of the GBA port and neither was he, but you can check out my review for it here.

I’ve also been playing bits and parts of Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign in anticipation for Revelator, and I have, of course, been squeezing in matches of Rocket League here and there. I’ve been doing pretty decent in Guilty Gear online too, I had an 8 win streak going the other day. I’m no combo expert, but I’m getting the hang of the higher level mechanics, slowly.

I also got pretty in to Zombi on the PS4. It’s a port of the the WiiU game ZombiU, but it’s pretty neat. It’s your standard first person zombie survivor game with a story, but one of my favorite mechanics is that when you die, you start over with a relatively empty inventory as a new (random) survivor. If you want to get your stuff back, you’ll have to return to where you died. If you were killed by another zombie, you’ll have to kill your last survivor. It’s definitely cool, and I think I’m getting near the end of it, so you may expect a review for it before long. It’s not my perfect zombie-survival game though; I’m still waiting for that fateful day.

I got a New 3DS as a belated birthday gift last weekend as well. The new stabilized 3D seems cool, and I’m looking forward to taking some Super Nintendo games around with me in my pocket, like Earthbound.

Lastly, I’ve been putting some time into Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars on my PlayStation Vita lately. Sometimes you just feel like a graphic novel/RPG. Well, sometimes I do anyway. It’s kind of like Persona in that you have time inside the dungeons to fight, and outside the dungeons to mingle with your friends and allies. Instead of summoning your inner psyche like Persona, you have “Star Children” with one (or more, usually more) of the seven heroines and they are your team members. It’s kind of strange, but pretty fun, and the presentation is great, so I’ll be sticking with it for a while.

Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign Review – PS4 — May 3, 2016

Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign Review – PS4

My Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign review is now live. You can read the full review from the Review page, or by clicking here.

Also, did you know that Cyberphile has a Facebook page? Feel free to swing by and get our new posts in your newsfeed.

Here’s the bottom line if you don’t have time to read the full review:

Pros:

  • Amazing presentation, both visually and musically.
  • Tight controls, mechanics, and gameplay.
  • A plethora of modes and options.
  • Unique and interesting characters that are fun to play.

Cons:

  • I only wish there were more characters! (Revelator!)
  • A little intimidating for first-timers.

Final Score: 9/10

The only thing that prevents me from ranking Xrd: Sign as a best game ever is the anticipation that Revelator will be EVEN BETTER. Here’s hoping!

What’cha Playin’? 4/28/16 — April 28, 2016

What’cha Playin’? 4/28/16

I feel like I have kind of hit a wall with Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign. I want to complete everything in the game, but a few things elude me. One of the modes, for instance, is a mission mode, which just requires you to successfully punish opponents after they use an attack with a decent amount of cooldown. That’s no problem, only that it also requires you to deal a set amount of damage in a single combo; something I have not yet grasped. I think I need to spend a decent amount of time in practice mode and watching other skilled players on YouTube to get a feel for what I should be doing. Not only that, but ranked online play and player matches are pretty scarce at this point. Ranking up may be difficult.

I did play a decent amount of Rocket League yesterday, however. Good stuff.

Lastly, content is kind of scarce until I get really into new games, so I’m sorry for that. Commenting to create conversation can help with that!

What’cha Playin’? – 4/27/16 Rocket League Hoops! — April 27, 2016

What’cha Playin’? – 4/27/16 Rocket League Hoops!

Honestly haven’t been doing a whole lot besides playing Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign. But yesterday that wasn’t entirely true because Rocket League‘s latest update included a new Hoops mode! So Rocket League now has soccer, hockey, and basketball covered! The Hoops mode is insanely fun, especially for high level players; it allows for a lot of fun aerial play, from awesome dunks, to off the side of the wall epic saves. It really breathes new life into Rocket League, not that Rocket League necessarily needed it! Check it out!

The Games of Summer — April 26, 2016

The Games of Summer

I’ve been putting some time into Guilty Gear Xrd: Sign, trying to get everything done in it before Revelator comes out June 7th. I finished the story mode, and I’m almost done with all of the character’s arcade modes. In fact, maybe you can expect a review of it soon?

This summer is going to be big on games for me. Lots of new games coming out that I’m excited for. Here’s my list:

  • Doom – 5/13
  • Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst – 6/7
  • Guilty Gear Xrd – Revelator – 6/7
  • No Man’s Sky 6/21
  • The King of Fighters XIV 8/23

June’s going to be a busy month!

What games are you looking forward to this summer? Post them in the comments and let’s chat!

What’cha Playin’? – 4/25/16 — April 25, 2016

What’cha Playin’? – 4/25/16

This weekend was the weekend that I finally managed to finish my Salt and Sanctuary lore synopsis. My 87 page synopsis, The Drowned Tome, is available in PDF format for online reading or to download it and read it later. Click here to check it out!

With that finally finished, I think I’ve finally burnt myself out on Salt and Sanctuary. You see, that’s how I typically play games: I get really into one or two, and just play them to death until I get sick of them.

Since I’ve finished everything I really feel like finishing in Salt and Sanctuary, it means I can play other games again! So over the weekend I put some pretty good time into Guilty Gear: Xrd: Sign, a bit solo, a bit with my friends, and I made a bit more progress in Demon’s Souls. Also, yesterday, my friend and I chugged through Jet Grind Radio on Dreamcast, since we both love that game so much. It’s just a great game to pop into the DC and power through. It’s great.

I also made a silly video for Salt and Sanctuary. Just be aware that it has final boss spoilers, and is a huge reference to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Check it out here!
