What’cha Doin’? 8/5/16

Not much, honestly. I’ve been listening to a lot of 65daysofstatic, and I had a bit of time yesterday for some Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars, but besides that, not much. The No Man’s Sky Soundtrack is officially released digitally, and so I’ve been listening to that, and so far, it’s fantastic. Really mellow and mysterious at the same time. I love it.

What’cha Playin’? – 8/4/16 — August 4, 2016

What’cha Playin’? – 8/4/16

Can’t wait for No Man’s Sky. Post is coming a little later than usual today due to a forced Windows 10 update that took FOREVER. Lately I’ve just been trying to fill the void where No Man’s Sky isn’t. I started listening to 65daysofstatic, the Math-Rock band that’s behind No Man’s Sky soundtrack they’re pretty great, at least, their first album, The Fall of Math is. In fact, I should be able to download a digital copy of said soundtrack tomorrow when it releases. Next, I started the first chapter of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in preparation for my No Man’s Sky voyage. Lastly, I’ve been playing the GBA Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars, which plays more like a turn based strategy game set some time in between the two games. I also started a playthough of Spyro the Dragon. You’ll have to forgive me, I’m kind of all over the place right now.

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner Review – PlayStation 2 — August 3, 2016

Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner Review – PlayStation 2

My Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner review is now live. You can read the full review from the Review page, or by clicking here.

Here’s the bottom line if you don’t have time to read the full review:

Pros

  • High speed satisfying combat.
  • Beautiful visuals and high quality anime cutscenes.
  • Great sounds and soundtrack.
  • Good story and likable characters.

Cons

  • Short, only around 6 hours.
  • Difficult and sometimes frustrating with unforgiving checkpoints.

Final Score: 9/10

Ultimately, you’re not going to find another game like this, especially since Konami is not-so-great a company anymore. The combat is fun, the characters are likable, the presentation is great… Honestly, what’s not to love?

What’cha Playin’? 8/1/16 — August 1, 2016

What’cha Playin’? 8/1/16

As we get closer and closer to the release of No Man’s Sky, I’ve just been trying to play things to fill the void. I’ve played some more Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner, which has gotten even cooler, but also more difficult. It’s pretty frustrating to get through most of a level, then die near the end and then have to do it all over again. I’ve also been playing a bit of Rocket League. But at the end of the day, all I want is for No Man’s Sky to be released.

Speaking of No Man’s Sky, the subreddit, /r/NoMansSkytheGame is an absolute mess right now. A few people have managed to get their hands on copies early and are leaking gameplay videos and streams and whatnot, and everyone is up in arms about how quickly one of the players got to the center of the universe as well as a number of other factors leading SOME to believe that this guy in particular got some sort of demo copy. Mods are stickying evidence threads, posts are out of control, it’s just kind of a mess… But it sure is fun to watch. Everyday there’s a new issue on that sub. Once the game officially releases and people can find out about the game for themselves, we’ll see how things go.

What’cha Playin’? – 7/29/16 – Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner — July 29, 2016

What’cha Playin’? – 7/29/16 – Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner

Having completed the first Zone of the Enders, I started the Second Runner last night. Right off the bat you can tell the production quality is much higher, with anime-style cutscenes (and cut-ins when there’s dialogue in the cockpit) instead of CG, and the graphics themselves look great, especially in the HD collection, which is what I’m playing both games on. It also seems to play just a tiny bit faster than the first game. There’s a lot more enemies on screen at once and the game is considerably harder, at least so far. The story and characters seem more fleshed out as well. My only real gripe so far is that the boss battles are awfully long as Jehuty seems to do such a minimal amount of damage with every attack. Of course, you can be killed pretty easily as your health bar is maybe 1/6th of the boss’s. That said, it’s still too early to pass judgments. I’m looking forward to playing more as soon as I can!

Zone of the Enders Review – PlayStation 2 — July 28, 2016

Zone of the Enders Review – PlayStation 2

My Zone of the Enders review is now live. You can read the full review from the Review page, or by clicking here.

Also, did you know that Cyberphile has a Facebook page? Feel free to swing by and get our new posts in your newsfeed.

Here’s the bottom line if you don’t have time to read the full review:

Pros

  • Fun, “High Speed Robot Action”
  • Good story and characters, minus 1
  • Fun and varied missions/objectives

Cons

  • Insufferable main character
  • Short
  • Combat is the same thing repeatedly with few unique enemies
  • Story ends just as things are getting good.

Final Score: 8/10

Even though it has its flaws, I still really enjoyed Zone of the Enders. Maybe drop it to a 7 if you can’t handle the flaws. Not many games can deliver high-speed anime-style robot combat quite the same. I’m very excited to start on the Second Runner.
